What do British
Fences Say About Us ?
Fencing can
give very strong messages whether enclosing a town square
or country park, a commercial, public or industrial
building
Perimeter
fencing is a statement, fences tell everyone about
the property it surrounds and the people within ...
and sometimes about those on the outside too..Historically
we have erected walls, fences, barriers and railings
to secure and protect us. The style of fence makes it
very clear of it's job too, there is no mistaking a
prison fence as much as a fence around a children's
play area has an obvious task. Often a security
perimeter or electric fence needs to be descreet
but offer good security management systems.
Listed buildings and conservation
areas often come under strict by-laws, rules and regulations
regarding erecting or demolishing fences and walls,
so we cannot always do what we like to protect our own
property. Indeed it is more likely that we have to preserve
railings surrounding a listed building and feel that
we are compromising security in doing so. In actual
fact it is a tribute to the original fencing fitter
that his work still exists. By using a combination of
traditional skills and modern technology, it should
be possible to install contemporary fencing and railings
to comply with local planning consent and still have
security.

If you are seeking a high security
perimeter without it looking like a high security perimeter
fence, Electro-Fence is a powerful intruder deterrent
system which can be attached to an existing perimeter
fence or to an existing physical perimeter barrier or
used as a stand-alone fence system and will interface
with standard security equipment. This perimeter security
system uses high tensile wires, spaced at a distance of
95mm apart and a safe, high voltage pulse is delivered
through alternate wires every second. The wire alternates
between live and earth.
The obvious
physical presence of the electric security fencing with
its bright yellow warning signs, presents a potent front
line deterrent. Access to the premises can therefore be
denied at the perimeter. As soon as an attempt to climb
or cut the fence is made, a safe, short, sharp, very unpleasant
shock is felt, resulting in a very effective barrier.
Any attempt to breach the electric fence generates an
immediate alarm in the guards post, control centre or
central station.

In
terms of fencing materials, we have two traditional choices
- wood and metal. 'Choice' may not be the correct term because
the use of material may be dictated by the purpose of the
fence. Wooden fences and railings are generally restricted
to agricultural and residential properties and gardens.
Corals, riding schools, stables and stud farms may choose
wood-like plastic fencing for low maintenance and economy |
| Playground
timber fencing is available in 'jakured' finish and
the owner may choose from a wide range of colour coatings.
Supplied in ready made fence panels with gravel boards for
attaching to posts and rail connectors. Matching self-closing
gates are available with galvanised metal frames or polyester
powder coating. Playground fencing is more about containing
children and keeping dogs out rather than securing the play
area. |

British Playground
Fences Punished More Than UK Prison Fences!
Playground fences often take more punishment than prison fencing
! A fence surrounding a play area has many jobs, we need to
see clearly inside, it needs to withstand children of all ages
... and sizes climbing upon it. A playground fence needs to
keep children in and animals out, it has to withstand fouling
too.
Chestnut fencing
for example is usually hand made with wood from sustainable
woodland management and is a versatile timber that can be used
for rustic appearances such as chestnut post and rail fences,
trellis, paling and lattice fencing including pergolas, gates
arbours.
Kissing gates
and Stiles:

British Standard for gates and stiles.
BS5709:2001, (ISBN 0 580 33287 X) is available. The publication
is endorsed by the Countryside Agency and the National Farmers'
Union and the Country Landowners' Association all of which were
involved in the publication. It states that stiles should not
be used for new structures except in exceptional circumstances
and that where a structure is needed on a path a Gap should be
the first choice, a Gate the second choice and a Kissing Gate
a third choice. The new standard makes it clear that the least
restrictive option will do - in this order; Gap, Gate, Kissing
Gate, Stile and the first one capable of performing the required
stockproofness must be used, afterall the priority is to secure
animals.
|
However, whilst we need to
protect livestock, we need to look at who will be using the stiles and
gates. The above picture shows a wrong style of stile - it greatly slowed
up their walk when many people were wanting progress because of 'very
active' horses in the field. The absence of any handholds made it quite
difficult for most people. So did the absence of a post to lean against.
The step is too narrow. So far as BADFA (Bushey & District Footpaths
Association) knows the stile is unlawful. A timber kissing gate is particularly
useful in districts populated by elderly people where a stile is unsuitable.
It serves two purposes, keeping the animals in (stockproofness) and
allowing pedestrian entry, there may also be a third purpose it the
restrictions of motorcycles.
