If you have embarked upon the quest for a business opportunity in Britain ... or anywhere in the world for that matter, you will be acutely aware that there is a plentiful supply of people making money out of business opportunities and not all are honest. They introduce scams to a very respectable arena and cloud the issue with fantasy and lies.
How do we separate the real business opportunities from the scam business opportunities?
Some scams are obvious and others will become apparent upon further research. Many look so good at face value that the investor is keen to get started immediately and parts with money just as quick.
If you stop in your tracks and suspend your search for a business opportunity for just a moment and join me in a short exercise in hacking the weeds out of the jungle of business opportunities and scams. First of all we'll assume you have access to capital funds because nobody is going to give you a leg up!.
Open your mind to a whole variety of business opportunities because there may be some that you would never have dreamed of in a million years ... and right under your nose ... the pun comes later! In order to expel the scams and rubbish, let's quickly look at seeking a proven business opportunity with a track record. We have two avenues, one is Businesses For Sale and the other is Franchises.
Businesses for sale usually involve buying a long established business and you will pay a premium for goodwill ... this is simply the reputation and future repeat business. Personally I would camp outside and watch the activity - then talk to one or two customers! Look at the reason for selling too. It is worth contacting a reputable agent for details of businesses for sale.
Franchises involve a ' business in a box ' ( so to speak ). When anyone chooses to invest money in a franchise it is because of the brand and back up provided by the franchise owner. Would you rather run a greasy burger cafe or invest more and buy a Burger King franchise?..... or Macdonalds, or KFC etc etc. You are buying into a readily marketed brand with a blue chip reputation and first class backing. Okay, you personally may not want to operate a fast food outlet or indeed don't have that kind of investment. You have a better chance of selling a branded product or service - and financial sources are keener to invest in reputable franchises instead of flagging businesses. A number of website provide comprehensive details relating to the franchises available.

The Franchise Business
We can't cover every available franchise in Britain, indeed some need specialist technical training and fit within a niche market. We can begin to filter the list right now. Firstly, will you be employing a manager or will you personally work? Do you want to be based indoors or out?
The question of indoors or outdoors is very important ... not whether you like fresh air or not, but from a marketing point of view. If you choose indoor it is likely to be a retail outlet like KallKwik printers, Thorntons Chocolates, Pizza Hut etc. We have all heard of these High Street shops because ... they are high street shops. Don't be put off by the " never heard of 'em "syndrome, there are thousands of businesses making millions of pounds that you have never heard of! Retail shops are static, you rely on customers visiting you.
I want to look for a business that serves practically every household and in retail I would think Sainsburys, Tesco and Asda fit the bill ... but they don't franchise. The rest restrict themselves to clearly defined sectors like printing, chocolate and pizza. There is nothing wrong with those industries but I am looking for something broader.
I like the idea of Outdoor business because the overheads are much less, marketing is mobile due the livery and corporate image... and we are not awaiting customers visiting us. We have the likes of DynoRod, Lasertech, SuperGleam etc. They are a good cross section of examples. DynoRod; I would be competing with big ads in Yellow pages and relying on call-outs. Lasertech is a laser printer cartridge replacement delivery service and I would be relying on others consuming the product and being mindful that I am looking for a business that serves almost every household ... I don't want to wait for them to call me either! " Dream on ! ! " - I hear you say. Well the less on the list, SuperGleam may well be worth a closer look.
Firstly, the customer base is potentially every household within a selected zone. It is not a business where I need to wait for customers to call me and the best bit is it has the "can you do that for me?" factor.
