Gas Oil is also known as 35 second oil and Red Diesel, this is used most often for commercial, industrial or agricultural use as a source of power or heating. The link here provides Her Majesty's Government details on Permission to use Red Diesel. New rules apply to buying red diesel, these came into force in April 2003. There is also an interesting article relating to Emergency Use of Red Diesel by Whiting and Partners which was published in light of the impending situation if fuel protestors carried out their threats. |

Customs and Excise announced that they may be prepared to grant licences allowing any people holding stocks of red diesel to use it as road fuel if the potential shortage became a reality. Whiting & Partners' VAT specialist, Barry Nudds, stated "Unfortunately, licences cannot be applied for in advance, and Customs will make further announcements if and when applications can be made. However, people holding stocks of red diesel can register their interest in advance of any further Customs announcement". Anyone interested in registering should send their organisation's name, address, VAT registration number (if they have one), and e-mail address to martin.kitchin@hmce.gsi.gov.uk, and an e-mail notification will be sent if it is decided to reinstate a red diesel scheme. Barry Nudds added "Despite these advance preparations, Customs have stressed that allowing people to register is certainly not to be taken as a guarantee that the scheme will actually be introduced" Road Diesel, or DERV - Bayford can supply in bulk if you have storage on site for your haulage or other road vehicle requirements. (CE31) Duty on rebated gas oil (red diesel), light oil delivered as furnace fuel and fuel oils were increased by 1 penny per litre in real terms from 6pm on Budget day. (CE31) A duty incentive for sulphur-free fuels of 5 pence per litre below the rate for ultra-low sulphur fuels will be introduced from 1 September 2004. (CE30) In recognition of the environmental benefits associated with this fuel, a duty incentive for bioethanol used (or set aside for use) as a road fuel, will be introduced. The incentive of 20 pence per litre below the prevailing sulphur- free rate will be introduced from 1 January 2005.
