When event management needs magic

Anybody with even a passing interest in staff development & training, corporate entertainment, conferences, exhibitions or product promotions would be aware of the task of constantly being on the look-out for qualified professional freelancers and highly motivated support staff. It is not an easy job and if someone could wave a magic wand to make it all happen, you'd welcome the wizard with open arms .. wouldn't you?

Outdoor Wizards - corporate event management

Enter OutdoorWizard! before I was introduced to outdoor wizards I, like most were under the impression that most Event Organisers were often individuals with a flair for organising and through their journey in event management they deployed other specialists who would build a team. Outdoor Wizards Ltd is a totally different breed of corporate event organisers and management professionals. Outdoor Wizards Ltd is a specialist provider of event solutions to the corporate sector. They work in partnership with their clients to design and deliver cost effective, creative and fun events to meet both training and/or entertainment goals.

Outdoor Wizards' great successes are attributable in the main to their greatest resource - a network of 450 associates and associated organisations based up and down the country - which guarantees their clients the very best partners, whatever the event. Outdoor Wizards' great successes are attributable in the main to their greatest resource - a professional network of 450 associates and associated organisations based up and down the UK - which guarantees every client the very best partners, whatever the event.

If you have any preconceived ideas or indeed experience in corporate events, I'd like you to put them to the back of your mind. We've all seen, heard or participated in team building, management development and the familiar reverse landrover challenge with a spot of clay shooting or archery and even a muddy lap or two on a quad bike. They are great fun and there may be a measure of success in achieving the result you carefully set out to achieve ... or not!

I spoke with Mark Lewis, managing director of Outdoor Wizards Ltd Mark talked me through a list of just some of the projects he has delivered in recent months. There may be some ideas that may be suitable for your event plans. If not, Mark assures me that he is always looking for opportunities to design new themes to fit any training or entertainment objectives.

Influencing Skills Training - one of the countries leading high street retailers commissioned Outdoor Wizards to design a 2-day experiential programme for a senior team of managers on the subject of influencing and assertiveness training. Delivered at Ashridge Business School in Hertfordshire, the programme combined a series of exercises with academic theory to allow the management team opportunity to learn, discuss and put into practice some of best practice in this field.

The Case for Chocolate - this is a new, but exciting project with extraordinary scope for facilitating learning around a broad range of issues - including project management, visioning, achieving effective communication, time management etc. Employed very successfully already with a large multinational life reassurance firm and a government agency, the activity requires all team members to involve themselves in the design and production of a box of chocolates ……. yes, real chocolates. The individual chocolates, as well as the box in which they are to be presented, are to be designed and produced in a way as to 'symbolically represents the group' (its values, behaviours and/or vision etc) as it is, or would like to be.

Rollerball - is a team development activity for large teams or for multiple teams. Designed as mid-term team-development exercise for an e-procurement solution for one of the high street banks, the briefing was written to reflect the various aspects of the real project rollout, so that the activity becomes an obvious metaphor for aspects of the real project. The physical objectives is to successfully "roll out" a ball (only powered by gravity) from one end of a constructed runway, through all zones, to the other. Each group will have an assortment of bamboo canes, pipes, guttering, tape, string etc to build their section of the "track". The learning objectives are to emphasise the importance of collaboration across work groups (success depends on all groups working as a single team working towards a shared goal), as well as providing a vehicle upon which to pre-empt some of the issues that may arise.

The Ultimate Pursuit - a multi-vehicular treasurehunt around a country estate in Berkshire pitting teams against each other in pursuit of the 'Holy Grail'. With 4x4 Land rovers, taxis, tandem bicycles, helicopters, roller-skates and other weird and wonderful modes of transport, the teams will have to undertake a series of challenges (both physical and cerebral) as they make their way round the course.

Military Theme - a fast growing ISP was taken up to the Midlands for a lightly military-themed day, around the idea of the US TV series M*A*S*H. Delegates took part in a range of activities - as if on a real military base - from tank driving to shooting and orienteering to archery ……. and much much more.

Designing and producing a T-shirt - a team project involving the full process of creating a bespoke T-shirt. 40 delegates from the country's leading legal recruitment firm were involved from design, through preparation of templates to print of enough T-shirts for all in attendance. The entire process takes place to a back-drop of up-beat music to drive both creativity and production. As well as being great fun, the activity represented a powerful vehicle upon which to focus discussion and learning around the team's vision for the future of the newly re-structured organisation.

'Covent Garden meets It's a Knockout' - a carnival atmosphere created through a range of activity and food stalls, street performers (stilt walkers, jugglers, magicians) and musicians. The central focus to the day being the activity arena in which teams (dressed to represent the theme of their team - e.g. Victorian Cricketers, Alien Invaders, Frolicking Farmers, Nuns 'n Vicars etc) will take part in a series of both traditional and unique challenges, loosely based on the style of 'It's a Knockout'.

Rocket Theme Day - a series of grounds-based problem solving activities around the theme of space, with the 'launching' of the rocket being an analogy for 'launching' clients business into its next phase of growth! It is designed to first and foremost to be a fun project, but can help reinforce learning around issues such as 'competition v co-operation', learning styles and trust. When delivered in the recent past, we have included items from client's product ranges throughout the project for developing product and brand awareness.
