Breakdown Cover and Roadside Recovery

UK Roadside breakdown and recovery services have undergone many changes over the years. The AA for example was once a great British institution famed for their patrolmen's salutation to alert speeding motorists. The RAC famed for it's roadside telephone boxes, now owned by Lex Services plc who operate Hyundai UK. We have Green Flag Group, formed in March 2000, in association with Direct Line the insurance service and last but not least, International Breakdown - probably the only top UK independent roadside breakdown and recovery service that purely focuses on vehicle rescue as opposed to other insurance related services.

Although the AA and RAC appear to be the most visually prominent, maybe because of their sales pitches outside supermarkets and shows etc. - ( their day-glow and reflective livery help too! ) all of the four mentioned arrange your breakdown cover through a nationwide network of skilled professional breakdown recovery operators and local garages. These companies are the same agents used by all the other major motoring organizations. This is why we don't see many International Breakdown vans and Green Flag vehicles. Equally we don't see AA and RAC vans where they deem it non-profitable.

MORI asked 1,237 women across the UK to select from a list of famous men, who they would be their favourite roadside rescuer if they suffered a car broke down. John McCririck the horse racing presenter came last, scoring less than 1% of the votes.

The top roadside rescuer was Sean Connery, with 20%, followed by George Clooney with 12% of the women surveyed. Teen favourites Robbie Williams and Ricky Martin with just 10% and 5% respectively. Ali G scored 2% and Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen with 1%.

The poll of 1,237 women around Great Britain was carried out by MORI between January 27th and 1st February 2000.

We all want fast and reliable vehicle recovery or roadside repair, we all want courtesy and efficiency. No doubt the local garages throughout Britain that are carefully chosen to act as agents for International Breakdown, AA, RAC and Green Flag meet stringent criteria. They will have invested in the right vehicles fitted with state-of-the-art tools and equipped to be able to rescue you as a matter of urgency. So, in reality after you have made your call for help to the chosen breakdown service, they will contact an approved recovery firm close to where you are are stranded. (unless they have their own unit in that area).

This means that communications between say International Breakdown and the approved local repair center needs to be fast and clear. Because actual roadside recovery companies are truly local, their area knowledge will be good too, but you still need to make it very clear where you are. Take a moment to get your bearings and whilst you are talking to the operator mention if you are a lone female driver, traveling with young children or are disabled.

Take the four breakdown recovery services mentioned; International Breakdown, Green Flag, AA and RAC and look at a shortlist of what they offer in general. The lists shown are not comprehensive but reflect those offered by the relevant breakdown service.

AA: Insurance, Loans, New and used cars, Car Maintenance and Breakdown cover.

RAC: Personal injury claims service, Driving Lessons, Car Insurance and Breakdown cover.

Green Flag: Ferry booking service, HPI car checker, Travel Insurance and Breakdown cover.

International Breakdown: Vehicle Inspection, Breakdown cover.

If we stripped the insurance and finance sections and examined just the breakdown services - which is why they were originally established, we can see what the costs are just for breakdown recovery.

London Congestion Charging From 17 February

The Mayor of London has introduced a new charge on cars traveling into central London to tackle the problem of chronic road congestion in London. Drivers entering a 'charging zone' from 7am-6.30p.m. Mon.-Fri. (excluding Bank Holidays) will be charged a fee of £5 which is payable at any time up to midnight on the day of your journey, although between 10p.m. and midnight an extra £5 surcharge will be added to discourage late payments.

By visiting www.cclondon.com you can make advance payments via the internet, on your phone, at petrol stations, in shops, by post and in and around the congestion charging zone.

Warning ! - If you fail to pay the charge before midnight on the day of the journey will be fined £80 (reduced to £40 if paid within 14 days from the date of the notice). Non-payment within 28 days will result in an increased penalty of £120. Motor bikes and taxis are fully exempt from the charge, however, foreign visitors using hire cars or their own vehicles are not.
